First Snow
The snow arrived a little earlier than I expected. The first snow always brings a great deal of excitement. We have talked about the expectations at recess with our playground looking a little different. The kids were excited to discover all that they could do with the freshly fallen snow. The strong winds made the day a little tougher to endure, but we got outside and we got lots of fresh air.

Just because the temperatures are getting colder and we have snow, it does not mean the season is winter. We had some discussion about this when we were thinking about changing the card to winter on our calendar. Fall is still with us until our winter break which was hard for us to believe.
Thanks for sending the kids with all their clothing for the colder weather. If you could label their items it helps us find things that may get on the floor or find their way to the lost and found.

Everyone had a chance to find interesting books to fill their book bins. Friday was International Dot Day. We were seeing lots of dots! Such a fun way to end the week. 100th Day of School!
We celebrated the 100th Day of School on Thursday. Stations were set up to highlight the multiple intelligences. Students from three classes were combined and the groups rotated through the stations all morning. Field Trip to the Children's Museum
Today we went to the Children's Museum. . . . what a fun-filled day. We were able to explore and discover before we went to the Expect Respect program. In Grade 1 we are talking a lot about being respectful to others. We were able to share some ideas about what respect means to us. Our leader spoke about the 7 Aboriginal Teachings. All the students decorated and made a drum to take home. Ms Knoll would have been proud to hear us making beats on our drum, listening respectfully, and matching the rhythms we heard. After the program we fueled up with a good lunch and then it was time to explore some more. We even went outside before the bus arrived to check out the play structure behind the museum. Thanks to all the adults who came with us to help things run smoothly. The museum was a hit. There was so much to see and do.
Here are our thoughts:

I loved, loved the train. I liked building with blocks and the water lab. -Callum
I liked when I went on the train and pushed the buttons. It turned on the train. I turned on the wipers. -Zachary
It was fun riding on the slide because you can go sideways and you can go down the slide really fast. -Sierra
I liked the lasagna because there was food inside and a noodle you push up and down. -Brady

I think we will all sleep well tonight after our full day of activity and excitement. Thanks to everyone for making it such an awesome day.

Keeping Busy!
We had more firsts this week, here are just a few . . .
Read to someone was introduced. The class discussed how to share a book when reading with another person. We talked about EEKK (sitting elbow to elbow, knee to knee). It was very evident that the students were keen on sharing their books.
Our Big Buddies in Ms. Dodd's grade 3/4 class visited our classroom. We will be spending time with our buddies once a cycle. This week our buddies did a short interview to learn more about their little buddies. It was a fun way to get to know each other.
In math we did some work on representing numbers using ten frames. Students were able to share their thinking with the class and to see that there are many ways to solve math problems.
Our classroom library is full of interesting books. Ms. Code came in to get us started on sorting some of our books so the class knows exactly what is in our library. We came up with some good categories. There are lots more books to sort so we will keep at it.
You may have heard your child talk about some of the movement breaks we have during our day.We have been enjoying the catchy rhythms and moves that give us energy or relax us as needed. Check out the information here to try it at home: Go Noodle.
Our Terry Fox run was in the afternoon. The whole school got together for an assembly where we got to learn a little more about Terry Fox. Then everyone headed outside to run laps around the field. All students had a Canada map paper and as they completed a lap they got a province stamped. We have some strong runners in Room 2. Your child may be very tired tonight as they put in lots of effort to run across Canada! Thank you for your contributions to cancer research.
I asked the students to think about what they did well this week . . .
Here are our thoughts:

Hello March!
March greeted us with some fierce wind and cool temperatures which meant. . . indoor recesses. The students enjoyed the option of getting in some movement with Go Noodle and also being able to have some choice time. We did an owl craft and we thank Ms Turner and her student teacher Miss Bauschke for the supplies. During the craft we discussed objects and materials which we have been working on in science. Pattern blocks are hugely popular with many of the students in room 2. The creativity shown is fabulous. We were able to see our Grade 4 buddies to do some reading this week. I think our big buddies enjoyed hearing some of the poems and songs we have been practicing. Mrs. Slukynsky came to talk to the Grade 1s about nutrition. We were able to sort pictures into the four food groups. The first week of March has been filled with lots of learning and fun. Next week we have student led conferences. We are looking forward to sharing with our families.

Norval Morrisseau Artwork
On Friday we ended our week with a special activity. Mrs. Kulyk helped us to create artwork inspired by Aboriginal artist Norval Morrisseau. The students selected a Manitoba animal for their piece. They drew a practice sketch in pencil and then received a watercolour paper to draw their animal. The animals were outlined in black marker and then painted using acrylic paint. After the pictures dried students touched up their work with black marker. The results are terrific. You can see them here on Artsonia.
This artwork is part of our AAA project this year. We will be writing letters to northern schools and sharing our artwork with them.
Here are our thoughts:
I liked painting my picture. -Brianna
I loved that we got to paint and add details with black marker. -Diamond

It was awesome that we got to pick what animal we wanted to draw. -Kyla
I liked my picture because I got to choose gold, red and orange. I like those colours. -Shelby
It was easy to draw the shape of my animal. I drew a duck. -Brayden
I liked painting my picture of an owl. -Saydee
It was hard doing the background painting. -Ezra
I learned that we can use five different colours to paint with. -Kody
I liked taking off the tape to make a border around my picture. -Kayden
I think that I'm an artist because it looks like an artist made my picture. -Ashley
I liked painting the pictures and doing the background. My background was purple. -Reese
Thanks to Mrs. Kulyk for sharing her expertise with these budding young artists.

Fort Whyte Alive
We went on a field trip to Fort Whyte Alive. We learned about how plants and animals survive our cold winters. We sure used our five senses on this trip. We saw so many interesting animals and plants. If we listened carefully we could hear the birds and the prairie dogs. We could smell the fresh outdoors. We touched the animals gently and some needles on the evergreen trees. We could feel the wind in our faces and the cold, crisp air on our cheeks. We tasted delicious food at lunch time to give us nourishment. Even though it was a bit cold with the windchill, we were dressed for the weather and we were able to enjoy the outdoor activities.
Here are our thoughts:
I saw lots of animals. -Kingston
