Yummy Hot Lunch!

Hot lunch is always a highlight at school. It also means parents do not have to make lunch for a day. We were very excited to hear the 12:15 bell. We have been busy doing animal research with Mrs. Dent Scarcello for IBL (Inquiry Based Learning). Ask your child which animal they are learning about and some facts they have found out. Measurement continues to be a focus as we are comparing things in our classroom. We reviewed our facts to 10 with a card game called Pyramid. Maybe you can play it at home.

Here are our thoughts:

Thanks to all our volunteers for helping with our hot lunch days. It takes a lot of organization and effort to coordinate a day like this. We appreciate it.
Enjoy your weekend everyone!

What a Week!

It has been a busy week. Monday started with an assembly featuring a performance by Fubuki Daiko. They are a Japanese Taiko drumming group. Hiroshi and Naomi held workshops for students with a final performance on Thursday. The grade 1s were able to experience the drumming as well which was such a treat.

With Earth Day on Saturday, April 22nd, we have been talking a lot about how we can all do our part to help our planet. We were encouraged to bring a litterless lunch on Tuesday. Our Walking Wednesdays started up again and we picked up garbage in the area along our route. We wore green and blue to school on Thursday as we continued to think about our Earth. The lights were frequently off in our classroom to help save energy. Our big window provided lots of lighting as we worked throughout the day.

We ended our week with a gallery walk through the school to see the excellent writing that was on display outside all of the classrooms. The kids were excited to see their own work and the work of friends and siblings.

Have a wonderful weekend. Remember it's Earth Day on Saturday, but we have been saying that Earth Day is every day. How are you going to make a difference?

We peeked in on the Decorah Eagles this morning. They are fascinating! Ms Wasney let us know that the eggs hatched and the nest is full of three baby eaglets. We are keeping an eye on them. Enjoy watching the eaglets grow and develop.

Paper Cut-Out Collages

In art class we learned about Henri Matisse. He was a famous artist who painted and sculpted. As he got older he was confined to a wheelchair which made it difficult for him to paint and sculpt. He didn't want to give up his interest in art so he began using scissors to create paper cut-outs. He said he was "drawing with scissors". His collages were admired by many. Some were extremely large murals that covered a whole wall. It was neat to be able to cut out shapes with our scissors. You may recognize some of our shapes, but many were made just by turning the paper and cutting unique forms.

Here are our thoughts:
I like cutting with scissors. -Lily
Matisse is a famous artist. I want to be one too. -Charlotte
I like the cut-out collages that Matisse made. He just used scissors and paper. He called it drawing with scissors. -Bianca
We made Matisse art. We used scissors and no crayons, markers or pencils. -Theo
I can make cool shapes by drawing with scissors. I can make some shapes wavy and bumpy. -Adria
I made a collage out of paper. It looks good. -Tyson
I liked the art we did. It was cool to cut out shapes. -Desi
It was really cool to make different shapes. -Ben
I liked some of the shapes some people made. Matisse is an artist. I am an artist too. -Ava
We cut shapes. I liked that. -Dominic
I liked making Matisse art. I like that I made a shape that looked like a dragon. -Brooke
Matisse is a very good artist. I like his collages. -Jack
I love Matisse and I love my collage I made. I bet he would like it if he was alive and in our school. -Brody
I cut out neat shapes. -Marshall
I like Matisse because he is a very good artist. -Andrew

You can see all of our collages on Artsonia. The artists in Room 2 are amazing.
