Happy Halloween!

BOO! We have been counting down the days until Halloween and the day finally arrived! We had a parade in the gym with all the classes sharing their costumes. Many family members and friends came out to watch the parade too. Thanks to the families that contributed delicious treats for our Halloween party. They will give us lots of energy to go out trick-or-treating. . . some snacks were healthy too :)

Remember to be seen out there tonight. Have a safe Halloween everyone!

One!

We had a special guest reader in Room 2. Our principal, Mrs. Palamar, came to our class to read her favourite book called, One by Kathryn Otoshi. The students were able to answer questions and discuss the important messages in the book. Mrs. Palamar challenged the class to encourage someone at home and to use kind words. I hope we all complete our homework challenge. Thank you Mrs. Palamar for visiting our classroom and for sharing your message.

Design Project: Bird Feeders

During our IBL classes with Mrs. Friesen we have been learning a lot about how people, plants and animals live throughout the changing seasons. We know that some animals hibernate, or migrate, or stay here. Students designed bird feeders to help the birds that stay here for the winter. Criteria was made together so everyone knew what was required for their design. Students were able to test their designs and make necessary changes like all good designers do. Self-reflection was an important part of the process as well. Students were asked to think about what they did well and what changes they would make next time. There were many good conversations before, during and after the design process. We were able to build our bird feeders with our Grade 1 friends in Ms Turner's class, which made it even more fun. It was a busy, active morning.

Here are some of our thoughts:
I liked making the bird feeders because we got to make our own. -Graysen
I put on the string so it could hang from a tree. -Kayden
I held the bottle and squeezed it. -Kingston
I liked making the bird feeder because it was hard work. -Kyla
I enjoyed touching the seeds because they felt smooth. -Diamond
I had to change my perch because it was too high. -Andrew
I liked holding the bottle when it was being filled with bird seed. -Ezra
I fixed the perch because it was too high. -Shelby
The thing that was easy was getting the bird seed in because we used a funnel. -Ashton
It was hard to put the long perch through the second hole. -Kody
I learned that the bird seed goes in the bottle so the birds can eat it. -Brianna
It was easy to walk around and get all the things I needed to make my bird feeder. - Xoie
I liked when I put the seeds in because I poured it in the bottle. -Ashley
I learned that the hole had to be big so the birds can get the bird seed. -Rylee
You need to put holes in the bottle so the birds can eat. -Brayden
The sticks weren't staying in the right spot so we used glue. -Saydee
It was hard to put the perch through the hole because the hole was small. -Reese
Sticking the perch in the bottle was easy because I twisted it. -Hunter

Thanks to the parent volunteers who were able to help us with this activity! Awesome work Grade 1s.

Guest Reader

We had a guest reader today in Room 2. Mrs. Tomchak is a resource teacher and reading recovery teacher at our school. She works with some students, but not all of our students get to see her. Children have been asking her to come to visit our class and today she was able to fulfill that request. Mrs. Tomchak read a story by Robert Munsch called, Lighthouse. The illustrations were beautiful. The book takes place in Nova Scotia which is where Mrs. Tomchak grew up. Room 2 would like to thank Mrs. Tomchak for visiting us today and for sharing a special story with us. You can find out more about the book here at the official Robert Munsch site.

Thinking of Others

BHS is beginning a few campaigns to help others and we are looking for your help!

The Grade 4 Green Team is collecting plastic bags for Take Pride Winnipeg's Bag Up Manitoba. This is a program across Manitoba for elementary schools as we help keep plastic bags out of the landfills.

S.P.I.N. Club, which consists of interested Grade 5 students, were introduced to a campaign started by Kid President. It is called Socktober. The club members thought this was a neat idea and are asking for new socks to be brought to school. These socks will be given to a shelter to help people in need.

At a time when we give thanks for all that we have, it is important to remember to care for our environment and to think of those less fortunate. Thank you for bringing in plastic bags and new socks to support these great causes!

Colour Wheel

After learning about the primary colours when we created our super heroes, we used plasticine to make the secondary colours. . . green, orange and purple. It was pretty neat to see the new colours appear before our eyes. Thanks to Ms Ducharme for sharing this great idea with us.
This is what we learned:
Primary colours make lots of colours. -Andrew
I learned how to mix colours. -Kayden
Blue and yellow makes green. - Hunter
You can make different colours. -Brianna
I learned how to make different colours like purple, orange and green. - Diamond
Red and yellow makes orange. -Kyla
I made purple from red and blue. - Graysen
I can mix colours. -Brayden
You can make lots of different colours from primary colours. - Ezra
Two colours can make a different colour. -Ashley
I can mix colours together. - Ashton
I learned about mixing different colours together and learning different colours. -Shelby
I learned how to make different colours. -Reese
All the primary colours make different colours. -Rylee
We can make lots of colours. -Xoie

Here are the primary colours
Squishing the plasticine is fun.

Placing the primary colours on the colour wheel.
Show what you've done.

Mixing blue and yellow makes......green!
All done my colour wheel.

Whoa........look how cool it looks when we mix red, blue AND yellow!

If we keep mixing it turns a grey colour.

Awesome job everyone. Now we know how to make the secondary colours.
Blue + Yellow = Green
Blue + Red = Purple
Red + Yellow = Orange

Keep an eye out for all the colourful things we see every day.

The First Few Days of October

Our plants for Resse to take care of.
Great structure

Teamwork!

Do you know what animals do for winter?
It has been a great week. Too bad the weather turned a bit blustery today. That wind was very cold. We have been discussing what animals do for winter.... hopefully we don't have to prepare for winter weather any time soon! Indoor recess gave us some more time make good choices and to be kind to others.
