Summer Holidays!

Wow, another school year has come to a close. This has been a very special year, not only because I was able to meet and work with fantastic young people, but also because it was my very first year as a Grade 1 teacher. Coming from Grade 5 was a big jump. I remember wondering what those first few days would be like. I was just as nervous as my students! We were able to grow and to learn together. And boy, did we do some great sharing and learning. I want to thank my kids for making me smile every day. My heart is full. I am sad to know that we will not be together as a group, and I am so proud of each of you. I know Grade 2 will be filled with exciting learning and you are ready for all the challenges that lie ahead. Thank you to the parents for the trust you have in us and for allowing us to teach your children . . . what a privilege.
It's summer holidays!
We certainly are looking forward to summer holidays. Have a wonderful, safe, fun-filled summer!

The Most Important Thing I Learned . . .

This year has just flown by. It is sad to think that we won't be together as a group in just a few days. I am so proud of what these young people have accomplished this year. We have been doing lots of reflecting and I thought it would be interesting to see what the students thought was the most important thing they learned this year. We talked about all the learning that has gone on, but I wanted them to think about one thing that was important and that would continue to help them in their role as a student. As always, they impressed me with their thinking.

Here are our thoughts to finish this statement:
The most important thing I learned in Grade 1 is

. . . to be kind every day. -Ezra
. . . reading helps me and my stamina. -Rylee
. . . to listen all the time. -Hunter
. . . to be kind to everybody. -Reese
. . . to read not too hard and not too easy books. Isla
. . . to practice reading. -Andrew
. . . to be kind to friends and say kind words. -Brianna
. . . I can read chapter books! -Ashton
. . . learning to be kind all the time. -Diamond
. . . reading helps me work hard. -Saydee
. . . I need to be kind to the teacher and the class. -Kody
. . . to read every day because it makes me read better and better. -Shelby
. . . to communicate with my friends during sharing time. -Kingston
. . . to read hard books. -Ashley
. . . to listen and work hard. -Kayden
. . . to read and learn my numbers. -Brayden
. . . kindness. To be kind is awesome! -Kyla
. . . reading helps me learn. -Xoie

I have learned that the growth the students show in Grade 1 is tremendous. It amazed me every day how excited everyone was about learning. It is clear that kindness has been an important message we have been sharing all year. To see the class so engaged in reading good fit books always put a smile on my face. Thanks to this amazing group of students for teaching me how much fun learning can be for all of us.

Have a great last weekend of June everyone! It looks like we will need lots of sunscreen.

Frozen's Summer Home

Ms. Claydon is taking care of our class pet, Frozen, over the summer. She sent us a picture to show us how Frozen is enjoying his new environment. Thanks again Ms. Claydon, for getting us our class pet. We really loved taking care of our fish with your help and checking on him daily. Reese went straight to feed Frozen this morning and then realized our pet was already on summer holidays!

Variety Showcase

The Variety Showcase was held yesterday and we were able to see the hidden talents of so many students at BHS. There were performances in gymnastics, dance, Tae Kwon Do, voice, guitar, ukulele, and piano. It sure takes courage to perform in front of the school and an audience of family and friends. Congratulations to Shelby who did a gymnastics routine with her sister. We are proud of you!

What a treat it was to have a delicious lunch after such an active morning. We were glad many parents were able to spend part of the day with us.

Measurement Rules!

We have been doing some measurement work this week. We read the book, How Big is a Foot to get us thinking about what measurement is. The students had fun tracing and designing their own foot. Our Big Buddies helped us to compare our feet to objects in the room. What is longer and shorter than your foot?

Here are our thoughts:
