Field Trip to the Children's Museum

Today we went to the Children's Museum. . . . what a fun-filled day. We were able to explore and discover before we went to the Expect Respect program. In Grade 1 we are talking a lot about being respectful to others. We were able to share some ideas about what respect means to us. Our leader spoke about the 7 Aboriginal Teachings. All the students decorated and made a drum to take home. Ms Knoll would have been proud to hear us making beats on our drum, listening respectfully, and matching the rhythms we heard. After the program we fueled up with a good lunch and then it was time to explore some more. We even went outside before the bus arrived to check out the play structure behind the museum. Thanks to all the adults who came with us to help things run smoothly. The museum was a hit. There was so much to see and do.

Snow is Here!

We had been spoiled with some of the milder weather in November. My car was ready for the colder conditions with winter tires and a tune up, but I wasn't really ready! The snow and windy conditions arrived last week and it reminded us that we have to dress for the changing weather. Some of us forgot our mitts and ski pants, but we remembered them the next day! It looks like the snow is here to stay so we are making the best of it.

Author Visit with Cary Fagan

The Canadian Book Centre gave each Grade One student in our school a Canadian children's book. This Grade One Book Giveaway is sponsored by TD Bank Group. Cary Fagan, author of Mr. Zinger's Hat, came to our school to read his book to our students. What a treat! Cary even played the mandolin and taught us a song so we could sing along with him. Thanks to Mrs. Hamilton for submitting our school's name for this fantastic opportunity.

The students loved receiving their very own copy of the book.
We hope parents will enjoy reading this delightful story to their children at home. What story is in your hat?

We thank the sponsors of this event and all the coordinating that went along with having Cary visit our school. We were one of only two stops on Cary's Manitoba book tour. Unfortunately the illustrator, Dušan Petričić could not attend. The students did comment on the terrific illustrations. It was so neat to see the students pick out their favourite page and to look around to see many had chosen the same one. Which page is your favourite?
Happy reading!

Designers in Action

The students have been learning many things about the five senses. As a final project, they decided which sense was the most important to them and they created a device to protect that sense. Wow, there were lots of terrific ideas being shared.

Coat Check

Maddox explaining his job.
Our coat area has been a bit messy lately. When I was walking down the hall I noticed Ms. Jeffery's class had their coats all neatly organized and all the shoes were in place. This sure looked impressive. I found out that a student in Ms. Jeffery's class is the Coat Rack Monitor. His job is to help his class keep a tidy area for their belongings. I took the Grade 1s for a visit to this area to ask them what they noticed. They too were impressed. We talked about why it is important to take care of our things, especially when we are part of a school with lots of kids. Maddox explained what he does as the Coat Rack Monitor. In our class Sierra's job is Shoe Police. She straightens out the shoes and boots. With all of us helping out, her job will be much easier.
Now it's our turn to get organized.
Here are our thoughts:
It is important to keep the coats up so people don't slip on a coat if it is on the floor. -Sasha
I hang up my coat. -Jay Dee
Usually everything falls on the ground, but now it's not falling on the ground. -Anna
It's important to clean up the coat room because if someone trips they could get hurt. -Levi
I hang up my bag. -Ethan
We need to put our jackets on the hanger and our boots and shoes together on the black line. -Callum
WOW! What an organized space.
If we don't put our coats on the hanger, if people step on them they will get dirty. -Naomi
I put my jacket on the hook. -Russell L.
We went to see the Grade 3 class and their jackets were hanging and their bags were on the silver hooks. They looked so nice. Now ours look nice too. -Bapreet
I hang up my coat and put my backpack away. -Cody
We need to hang up our coats because if people walk by they could slip. -Jake
If we don't hang up our stuff it does not look good and people have to tell us to hang it up. -Zachary
I learned that if you don't hang up your jackets the hallway will be really mesys and you'll have to clean it up. -Brady
If we didn't put our shoes side to side and they were spread out all over the floor people would kick them. -Landyn
If you wouldn't hang your jackets up it would be on the floor and people would trip. Russell A.
It's not good to leave your clothes on the floor because people will pick them up and put them in the lost and found and you might not know that. Hang up your clothes. -Josh
I liked when we went to look at the Grade 3 coats because it was tidy. -Eliza
We had fun looking at the other classes' coats. We looked at them and we keep ours tidy now. -Sierra
I liked when we looked at the other coats and when I saw it I thought now we should put ours like that. We did! -Cady

I'm proud of you for doing such a great job! I know we will be able to do this every day.

Have a great weekend everyone. Our Remembrance Day Assembly will be on Monday, November 9 at 10:30.

Cenotaph Visit

Luckily it wasn't raining when the Grade 1s planned to walk to the Cenotaph on Monday morning. We all stood around the Canada flag and sang O'Canada beautifully. Ms. Knoll read the names of the people on the Cenotaph and we recognized that some of the streets in the area are named after these people. It was a perfect visit as we have been talking about peace and Remembrance Day. The Cenotaph is located at Memorial Park. This park provided us with some exercise and play before we returned to school. The students did a great job listening respectfully as the names were read from both sides of the Cenotaph. The smiling faces and carefree play made my heart happy. We thank those who have given so much for our freedom.
