Keeping Busy!

We had more firsts this week, here are just a few . . .
Read to someone was introduced. The class discussed how to share a book when reading with another person. We talked about EEKK (sitting elbow to elbow, knee to knee). It was very evident that the students were keen on sharing their books.

Our Big Buddies in Ms. Dodd's grade 3/4 class visited our classroom. We will be spending time with our buddies once a cycle. This week our buddies did a short interview to learn more about their little buddies. It was a fun way to get to know each other.

In math we did some work on representing numbers using ten frames. Students were able to share their thinking with the class and to see that there are many ways to solve math problems.

Our classroom library is full of interesting books. Ms. Code came in to get us started on sorting some of our books so the class knows exactly what is in our library. We came up with some good categories. There are lots more books to sort so we will keep at it.

You may have heard your child talk about some of the movement breaks we have during our day.We have been enjoying the catchy rhythms and moves that give us energy or relax us as needed. Check out the information here to try it at home:  Go Noodle.

Our Terry Fox run was in the afternoon. The whole school got together for an assembly where we got to learn a little more about Terry Fox. Then everyone headed outside to run laps around the field. All students had a Canada map paper and as they completed a lap they got a province stamped. We have some strong runners in Room 2. Your child may be very tired tonight as they put in lots of effort to run across Canada! Thank you for your contributions to cancer research.

I asked the students to think about what they did well this week . . .

Open House and Family BBQ

Thank you to the families who were able to come out to visit our classroom and enjoy a meal outside. We were very excited to show parents where we spend our days. I really enjoyed putting faces to names and meeting so many wonderful people. What a terrific way to spend time with each other and to celebrate our great school community. The first day of fall brought the sunshine and some warmth that we needed to be picnicking outside. I loved looking around and seeing families and friends talking and sharing laughs. Thanks to all who helped make our open house and BBQ a success!

First Days in Grade 1

Moving as we learn.
At BHS the Kindergarten students come to school all day so being here for a full day is not something new, but being at school each day is a bit of a change. Starting the year off with a three day week is a nice way to get back into the school routine. I was glad to see that we still had energy as our Friday was winding down. Perhaps my energy was not quite as high as the kids, but I gave it my best shot!

Students will be sharing their voice with you as we reflect on our learning and express ourselves throughout the year. I asked them to think about their first few days as official Grade 1ers . . .
Some sorting and number work.
It was fun seeing all my friends again. -Landyn
My classroom looks really nice. -Zachary
I liked playing with new toys. -Cody

I met new friends. -Ethan
I like watching things on the projector. -Sasha
I like playing with my friends. -Callum
At recess I play with my friends. -Eliza
I really liked meeting the class and all the kids here. -Cady

I loved meeting my new kids. I look forward to our daily conversations as we get to know each other better.

Enjoy the weekend everyone. The sun will be shining and it will feel like the middle of summer again. I hope the beautiful weather continues for a bit. I'm not ready for heavy sweaters yet.

Grade 1, Here We Come!

The classroom came to life when my Grade 1 friends entered the room. What a great way to start the day by seeing so many smiling faces and some yawning ones too . . . mine included. We introduced ourselves to our classmates and welcomed Ethan to our Bird's Hills School family. It was fun to get to know some new faces as we mingled around the classroom to meet each other and to find out things we liked. It was a busy, full day. In Kindergarten students got a day off after coming to school, but in Grade 1 we get to see each other each day. I know I will sleep well tonight and I hope you do too. Thanks for making the start of the year such an exciting one! I can't wait to see all of you tomorrow.

Welcome Back!

A new school year starts tomorrow for teachers and on Wednesday for the students. I always have difficulty sleeping these next few nights. . . I'm so excited and nervous too! Tomorrow the staff will be able to get together to share lots of information needed for a positive start to the year. We have some new staff members bringing their talents and expertise to our building and that is fantastic. It will be so good to catch up with everyone. I can't wait to meet my new class and to see my former students. We will have so much fun getting to know each other and getting started on an awesome year of learning.

See you soon!
