It was an Awesome Week

Role playing

It was another busy week in Room 2. We had an assembly to learn about the bus loop expectations. Students enjoyed role playing the behaviours we should and should not see in the bus loop. We had hot lunch today. It is a nice treat to have a special lunch each month. Thanks to the volunteers who make this possible. Students have also been sharing their writing with the class. We are trying to begin our sentences with a capital letter and remembering to use end punctuation. Our field and tarmac areas have become very slippery with the changing temperatures outside and as a result there have been some indoor recesses. The students were happy to get outside when we were able to. We ended our week thinking about what we enjoyed about our time together.

Here are our thoughts:

Norval Morrisseau Artwork

On Friday we ended our week with a special activity. Mrs. Kulyk helped us to create artwork inspired by Aboriginal artist Norval Morrisseau. The students selected a Manitoba animal for their piece. They drew a practice sketch in pencil and then received a watercolour paper to draw their animal. The animals were outlined in black marker and then painted using acrylic paint. After the pictures dried students touched up their work with black marker. The results are terrific. You can see them here on Artsonia.

This artwork is part of our AAA project this year. We will be writing letters to northern schools and sharing our artwork with them.

Here are our thoughts:

Remind

As another form of communication we will be using a tool called Remind. This is a safe way for teachers to text message or email families without needing to exchange phone numbers. A note is being sent home today to explain how it all works. I am looking forward to families subscribing to receive reminders by text or email. Thanks to Mrs. Dent Scarcello and Ms.Wasney for helping me set this up.

Day of Pink T-shirts

The Canadian Red Cross Day of Pink is being held on April 8th, 2015. This event is about encouraging respect. The Day of Pink originated in Nova Scotia in 2007. Two students heard that a boy in their school had been picked on for wearing a pink shirt to school. The students decided to take a stand against this behaviour by encouraging their classmates to wear pink. The response was overwhelming. Since then other provinces have held their own Pink Day.

Once again, Bird's Hill School will be recognizing Day of Pink on Wednesday, April 8th. Staff, students and families are able to purchase t-shirts for $5.00. Please return the order form that was sent home by January 27th. Thanks for organizing this Ms Wasney. What a great way to show that we all stand for respect!

Word of the Year

Happy New Year everyone! 2015 has gotten off to a chilly start. We stayed indoors all day today because it was too cold to be outside. It was awesome to see all the familiar faces this morning and to meet our new student, Isla. We are very happy to have her join our learning community. The class had a chance to talk about the holidays and the end of 2014 as well as the start of a new year and all the exciting adventures that lie ahead. I recently saw a neat idea about a "Word of the Year"....a word that we can think about the whole year that has meaning to us. I have never been very good at making (or keeping) resolutions so I shared this idea with the class. We had time to discuss and share some ideas.

Here are our Words of the Year. . .
Love. . . I care about people. -Diamond
Friends. . . are important so we don't get bored. - Ashley
Giggles. . . I like to giggle with my friends. -Kingston

Loving. . . loving my parents. -Ashton
School . . . we get smart at school. -Kody

Smile. . . you can brighten someone's day with a smile. -Mrs. T.
Play. . . I like playing with my brother at home. -Brianna
