Zones of Regulation Video

We were inspired by the video, Just Breathe, by Joan Bayer Salzman and Josh Salzman which can be viewed here. Room 2 decided to create our own version. Students wrote the script for their part in our Zones of Regulation video. We rehearsed what we wanted to say and then it was lights, camera, action! Thanks to Ms. Booth for filming, editing and producing the final production. It was viewed at the Celebration of the Arts Evening, but some of you may have missed it. We hope you enjoy our version.

A Celebration of the Arts Evening

We had a great evening to celebrate the arts at Bird's Hill School last night. The WSO Group, grade 3 and 4 choirs, grade 4/5 and 5 Orff Ensemble performed. There were video presentations of kindergarten classes, grade 1 and 2 choir, artists in the schools stories and grade 1s. Each classroom had writing displayed for our reading pleasure. A "Good Writers" scavenvger hunt was also set up throughout the halls. Thanks to those who brought in food for all to enjoy.

Here are our thoughts:
I had a long time to finish my poetry about football. I liked how I figured out how to say it when so many ideas were coming into my head. -Russell A.
I liked searching for the missing letters. -Josh
I enjoyed doing the word search because I was almost the first one done. -Anna
I wrote a poem about cats because I love cats. -Gavin
I liked filling out the passport that I got. -Jake
I was in the videos. -Russell L.

Last night was fun because I got to go around and find different words that good writers do. -Sierra

What a fantastic way to bring the community together and to celebrate our learning. We hope you enjoyed the evening. I will post our grade 1 video on the Zones of Regulation shortly. Thanks to Ms. Booth for all her help in the final production.

Happy Earth Day!

Earth  Day Art
We have been doing activities for Earth Day this week. We have talked about how we all need to do our part to help planet earth. You can view the artwork we created using coffee filters and watercolour paints at Artsonia.

Here are our thoughts:
I am going to recycle cans and bottles everywhere so the world won't be covered in garbage. -Levi
I am not going to be a littler critter. I will pick up garbage off the ground -Cady
I am going to use both sides of the paper and never waste it. -Zachary
I will not waste paper so we don't have to cut down trees. -Josh
I will throw garbage in the garbage can if it's on the floor and recycling in the recycling box. -Bapreet
I am not going to litter. I am going to not use as much garbage. I will not leave on the sink when I am in the washroom. -Brady
I am going to use less water in my bath to help save water. -Russell A.
Litterless Lunches
I will not litter and I will have shorter showers. -Jake
I will use both side of the paper when I am drawing and colouring pictures. -Naomi
I will take shorter showers so I don't waste water. I will tell my mom to use less water in my brother's bath. -Landyn
I will turn off the lights when I am not in the room. This will save power. -Eliza
I am going to put on gloves and get a garbage bag and go around and pick up garbage that is close to my house. People shouldn't litter. -Callum
Give Earth a Hand
If I find garbage on my way to school, I will  pick it up and put it in the garbage can. -Sierra
I will save my food if I don't eat all of it. We should not waste our food because there are other people in the world that don't have food. -Anna
I have got to keep the earth healthy. I will pick up trash to save the earth. -Gavin
I will turn off the water when I brush my teeth. -Jay Dee

There is no school tomorrow. We are hoping you can all do something to celebrate Earth Day with your family. Maybe you can clean up litter around your home, turn off the lights for a period of time, walk or bike instead of driving, or power down electronics for the day. Let's make a difference.

Blue and Green Day
Have a great weekend and thanks for helping our earth!

Decorah Eagles

Have you ever had a closeup look at Decorah eagles? Well here's your chance. Ms. Wasney keeps us informed about the eagles and she sent us the link. Two eaglets have been born so you can see this family of bald eagles grow and live each day. Check out the amazing footage.

Day of Pink

At our assembly today we celebrated Day of Pink. It looked like a sea of pink in our gym. We need to remember to be respectful and kind every day, not just on Day of Pink.

Here are our thoughts:
When I play football I need to pass the ball to my teammate. You don't have hands on. -Cody
I wore pink today. I am nice to people every day. -Callum
Don't bully people ever. -Naomi
I wore a red shirt today because I don't have a pink one. We need to be nice to people. -Landyn
I like having Day of Pink because it is important that you be kind to other people. -Russell A.
Today is Pink Day at school. We had an assembly. We talked about not being a bully. -Bapreet
Today is Day of Pink. Everyone was supposed to wear pink. We need to be nice and kind to each other, take care of others and think about others. -Zachary
Today is Day of Pink and lots of people are wearing pink. We talk to people nicely each day. -Eliza
I learned to take care of people all the time not just today. -Levi
On Pink Day everybody is nice to each other. You have to be nice everyday too. -Brady
I am wearing a pink shirt today. -Russell L.
On Pink Day everybody wears pink because there was a boy in school that wore pink on his first day and people bugged him. These two guys made a difference by telling everyone to wear pink. -Anna
I am wearing my new pink shirt today. -Jay Dee
I love the pink shirts. -Ethan
Today is Day of Pink. Everybody is supposed to wear pink to remind us to be a good friend. -Cady
Today we are supposed to wear pink because Day of Pink is supposed to remind us to be good to people. That will make people happy. -Sierra
Today is Day of Pink. I couldn't wear a pink shirt because I don't have a pink shirt so I got a pink paper bracelet to wear at school. -Jake
I love the Day of Pink because everybody is wearing pink. It looks amazing. -Gavin

I heard Travis Price on CTV this morning as he is in Winnipeg doing some public speaking for Manitoba Red Cross. The Day of Pink started in Nova Scotia and has now gone international. It is true, it only takes one to make a difference. Let's continue to build positive relationships each and every day.

Zones of Regulation

I am impressed with the language I have been hearing as we continue to talk about the Zones of Regulation. At student-led conferences, many parents commented on how the language is being used at home as well which is fantastic. Throughout the day we use our zones folder to indicate which zone we are in. One day after lunch a student came in and asked if we were doing our zones self-assessment now, One student said he was in the yellow zone because he was excited about the afternoon and another student asked how to draw "ready to learn". See why I'm impressed! Students have been identifying strategies to help them get in the green zone so they can have productive learning times. We will be creating a "zones video" as well. We can't wait to see how it turns out!

Here are our thoughts:
I'm nervous to make the video, because I have never made one before. -Landyn
I'm happy to make the video. I'm deciding between red zone and green zone. -Russell A.
I'm going to talk about the green zone. -Josh
When I am in the red zone, I go to the quiet spot in the classroom. I sit for 10 minutes. -Cody
I am writing about the red and yellow zone. When I am in the yellow zone I read a book or draw to calm myself down. -Bapreet
When I am really angry sometimes I just need to take a rest or have alone time or do the lazy eight. -Zachary
I'm writing about the green and blue zone. I picked those because sometimes I'm in the green zone and sometimes I'm in the blue zone. -Eliza
I am in the green zone because I am happy. -Ethan
I feel sad when I am in the blue zone. I take deep breaths to help me get out of the blue zone. -Levi
When I'm in the red zone, I take deep breaths. It helps me get calm. -Jake
When I am in the green zone, I feel ready to learn. When I'm happy I like to play with my friends. -Sierra
When I am in the green zone, I feel calm and focused. -Cady
I am in the green zone because I am calm. -Russell L.
When I am in the blue zone, I feel kind of sad. When I want to go back to the green zone, I just go and play with my friends. -Anna
When I'm in the red zone, I take deep breaths and I try to calm down. If it doesn't work, then I read a book. -Brady
When I am happy I am in the green zone. -Jay Dee
When I am in the red zone, my brain can get a headache. I take deep breaths to calm down. -Gavin

I hope your day has been very green zone-ish!

We're Back!

Spring break offered us some time to relax and fill our days with things we don't get to do during the school week. I was glad to see so many cheerful faces this morning, although we do admit to being a bit tired. Some of our friends are away sick so we hope everyone gets healthy and back on track very soon.

Here are our thoughts:
I watched the Phantom Menace at home. I went to a Spring Break Camp. Every day we had a field trip. -Callum
I stayed up late and I slept in. -Landyn
I had a sleepover at my granny's house. We made an oreo cookie cake. -Russell A.
I played outside. I was happy. -Jay Dee
I went to Toys R Us and I got a Lego Nexo Knights set. -Jake
I was playing video games with my little brother. I got new toys for Easter. -Cady
Easter was fun because we went to my old neighbour's house for Easter dinner. My cousins were there and my aunty. My mom and dad had fun too, -Sierra
I played outside. I was splashing in some puddles. -Gavin
I liked when we went to the hotel because there was a giant water slide there and we got to go on it. Then we went to go have supper at a restaurant every night. After the restaurant we went to our friend's house and we played with them. -Anna
I went to Toys R Us and I went to someone's house for brunch. Then I went to a birthday and I went to laser tag. -Josh
I went to the museum with Opa. -Ethan
I had fun finding all the chocolates on Easter. Naomi
I played on the play structure outside on the grass. I played soccer with my uncle. -Bapreet
Yesterday we bought some fish and we bought four of them. When we got home me and my mom and my sister named them. My sister`s name was Spike, my mom`s name was Fin and mine was named Turbo. The other fish is Jet. -Eliza
I played with my sister. Russell L.
I went to the Jets game on Friday with my grandpa. They had 1 and the other team had 2 goals. I got a fanta for a drink and some fries. -Levi
I went to Pirates Cove Playland. It was fun to shoot the cannon balls.I liked to jump in the pool and I liked to go in the hot tub. Then I liked to play more on the play structure. -Cody

I stayed at home during the break which was enjoyable. I had plans to do lots around the house, but there weren't too many things that got crossed off my list! We are energized and ready for the spring weather to warm us up! I hope your April is off to a great start.
