Enjoying the Outdoors

We got quite a bit of rain.
Despite the wetter weather, we were prepared to walk on Wednesday. We listened for sounds and noticed that the wet roads allowed us to hear some tires splashing through the puddles. We noticed the trees that lose their leaves and the "Christmas" trees that stay green. Some trees were still hanging on to a few leaves.

We were tempted to jump in this pile of leaves.
Here are our thoughts:
It was fun jumping in the leaves. -Tyson
I threw the leaves up. -Ava
I like going on the walk. I heard cars. -Bianca

So much to see around us.

Beautiful colours.

School Assembly

The grade 1s hosted an assembly on Wednesday. We introduced the school to Zones of Regulation which talks about how we can self-regulate by identifying the zone we are in. Also, we led all the students in the singing of our school song. Thanks to Ms Wasney for videotaping some of the assembly so we can share it with you.

How Are You Feeling?

We have been talking about feelings as we learn more about Zones of Regulation. Our faces really do show how we are feeling and it is helpful to be able to know what facial expressions mean. We drew faces to show happy, sad and angry. It was important to pay attention to the shapes of our eyes, eyebrows and mouths when we were drawing these faces. Students are working on identifying their own feelings and how they look and act differently.

Here are our thoughts:
Sometimes I can feel happy or sad. -Arianna
When you are happy you can see peoples' teeth. -Tyson
When I drew a happy face I drew big eyes and a smile. -Ava
When I am sad I cry. -Desi
I am sad and my face looks droopy. -Blake
I smile when I am happy. -Dominic
When I am angry I am mad. -Jack
When I get happy I smile. -Ben
When I am sad I feel like I am going to cry. -Charlotte
I feel mad when I go to my room. -Lily
I yell and slam my door when I am mad. -Chase
I am mad when other people do mean things to me. -Brody
Sometimes my face looks mad. -Andrew
I drew a happy face. -Stacey
I smile and it's so much fun that my friends want to play with me when I am smiling. -Brooke
When I am sad I cry. -Theo
When I am happy I have a smile. -Adria

It is good to be able to express ourselves. Can you identify these feelings?

Socktober

S.P.I.N. Club (Support People In Need) consists of interested grade 5 students. For their first initiative, the club is collecting socks for Socktober. This idea originated from Kid President and has been a huge success at our school. Last year BHS collected 557 pairs of socks for those in need. This campaign will run from October 17-31. We appreciate your contribution of new socks to this cause!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope our centrepieces made it home safely and that they found a place to be admired in your home . . . sorry if they are a little messy! We created some criteria for our centrepieces. They needed to include a bun as the base with our name on it. The items we selected needed to be about one ruler tall. We needed to poke holes near the centre, but not all in the same spot and the centrepiece needed to look good! We think we met the criteria very well.

Here are our thoughts as we completed this sentence:
I am thankful for . . .
my house. - Ava
my 2 wheel scooter. -Andrew
being a big sister. -Arianna
my family. -Theo
my dog. -Ben
my dad mowing the grass. -Blake
my mom and dad. -Tyson
my mom putting me to bed. -Brody
my dad taking care of me. -Chase
everyone coming to my party. -Jack
my momma. -Stacey
my mom and dad. -Charlotte
my family. -Dominic
my poppa. -Desi
kisses, hugs and friends. -Brooke
my mom and dad. -Lily
my family. -Bianca

As a class, we talked about being grateful every day. We have so much to be thankful for. I hope you find time to be with friends and family this weekend. Enjoy!

The Dog House Canteen

The Dog House Canteen is open for another school year! The canteen will be open every second month starting in October on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12:15 - 12:35. All treats are $1. For the month of October, proceeds will go to Ronald Mcdonald House.

This venture originated last year from interested grade 4 students and their passion continues on in grade 5. Ms Wasney purchased aprons for the canteen staff which adds such a professional look. Congratulations grade 5s for thinking of ways to help others!

Thanks for supporting the canteen.
