First Days in Grade 1

Moving as we learn.
At BHS the Kindergarten students come to school all day so being here for a full day is not something new, but being at school each day is a bit of a change. Starting the year off with a three day week is a nice way to get back into the school routine. I was glad to see that we still had energy as our Friday was winding down. Perhaps my energy was not quite as high as the kids, but I gave it my best shot!

Students will be sharing their voice with you as we reflect on our learning and express ourselves throughout the year. I asked them to think about their first few days as official Grade 1ers . . .
Some sorting and number work.
It was fun seeing all my friends again. -Landyn
My classroom looks really nice. -Zachary
I liked playing with new toys. -Cody
I liked drawing pictures. -Russell L.
I liked seeing my friends. -Levi
I like our classroom. It has nice colours. -Anna
There is cool stuff on our boards. -Makhaila
I liked making new friends. -Russell A.
There are nice toys and storage in our room. -Josh
I like reading and writing. -Naomi
I met new friends. -Ethan
I like watching things on the projector. -Sasha
I like playing with my friends. -Callum
At recess I play with my friends. -Eliza
I really liked meeting the class and all the kids here. -Cady
I liked playing in the sand with the seashells. -Sierra
I liked the rice station and meeting new friends. -Brady
I play hockey with a boy in my class. -Jake
I liked playing with my friends. I liked meeting everyone. -Gavin

I loved meeting my new kids. I look forward to our daily conversations as we get to know each other better.

Enjoy the weekend everyone. The sun will be shining and it will feel like the middle of summer again. I hope the beautiful weather continues for a bit. I'm not ready for heavy sweaters yet.

Grade 1, Here We Come!

The classroom came to life when my Grade 1 friends entered the room. What a great way to start the day by seeing so many smiling faces and some yawning ones too . . . mine included. We introduced ourselves to our classmates and welcomed Ethan to our Bird's Hills School family. It was fun to get to know some new faces as we mingled around the classroom to meet each other and to find out things we liked. It was a busy, full day. In Kindergarten students got a day off after coming to school, but in Grade 1 we get to see each other each day. I know I will sleep well tonight and I hope you do too. Thanks for making the start of the year such an exciting one! I can't wait to see all of you tomorrow.

Welcome Back!

A new school year starts tomorrow for teachers and on Wednesday for the students. I always have difficulty sleeping these next few nights. . . I'm so excited and nervous too! Tomorrow the staff will be able to get together to share lots of information needed for a positive start to the year. We have some new staff members bringing their talents and expertise to our building and that is fantastic. It will be so good to catch up with everyone. I can't wait to meet my new class and to see my former students. We will have so much fun getting to know each other and getting started on an awesome year of learning.

See you soon!

Canada Day!

On July 1st Canada will celebrate its 148th birthday. The East St. Paul Lions Club gave the Grade 1s Canada flags and certificates. On Monday we went outside with our friends from Ms. Turner's class to circle the flag that flies outside our school. We sang O'Canada as we waved our flags proudly.

Here are our thoughts:
There are lots of friends in Canada. I made my flag go high in the air when we sang O'Canada. -Xoie
I am going to bring home my flag and keep it in my room forever. -Saydee
On Canada Day I am going to go outside and wave my flag. -Shelby
I am glad we got Canada flags. -Kayden
When I get home I am going to hang my Canada flag outside on the front door. -Hunter
I am going to put my Canada flag in my room on my jewellery box. -Diamond
I am going to put it on my mom's door of her room. -Brianna
When I get home I am going to put the Canada flag in a pot in the middle of the kitchen table. -Andrew
On Canada Day my brother's friend Ryan comes over to celebrate for Canada. Sometimes we have pizza for supper. -Ashley
I celebrate Canada Day by singing O'Canada. -Kody
I am going to wave my flag on Canada Day in my house. -Kyla
I love Canada Day because we celebrate and it is fun. -Ezra
I am going to put my flag in my garden that I planted. My bean is in it too. -Ashton
When we sang O'Canada I was going to look up at the school flag, but the sun was too bright. -Reese
Canada Day is my cat's birthday and I think that is cool. My cat, Frankie will be turning 9. -Isla

Happy Canada Day! Be proud to be Canadian.
